It was 1953 when UGL held its first national sales meeting and introduced the DRYLOK line, including nine separate products for waterproofing basements, stopping active masonry leaks, protecting and beautifying interior or exterior masonry walls. Since that time, a nationally recognized rating magazine has rated waterproofing paints on two separate occasions and both times, DRYLOK Masonry Waterproofer has come out on top. Always changing with the times and giving consumers what they want, DRYLOK Masonry Waterproofer was first formulated as a powdered masonry coating. Next, UGL introduced a ready-mixed oil-based formula and than a latex-based formula. All formulas, equally good but suiting different purposed for the consumer. Recently, in response to government voc regulations, UGL was able to formulate the DRYLOK Latex Based Masonry Waterproofer into a low VOC formula for the OTC States. In the past couple of years, the mass media has created a buzz regarding Mold/Mildew resistant coatings; this has created a consumer driven need to offer a top rated coating with a mildew resistant additive. The UGL laboratory technicians went to work to develop a masonry waterproofer coating that could hold up to the DRYLOK reputation, holding back water equal to or greater than a basement height of water and have additional consumer friendly properties. The results were DRYLOK Extreme Masonry Waterproofer. DRYLOK Extreme has been tested by independent labs to hold back 12 psi of water pressure (a wall of water 26 ft high). It is a latex base, low odor voc compliant formula. It has a smoother finish for consumers who want a house paint type look with the waterproofing capabilities of a waterproofing paint. It comes with a 15 year – fully transferable warranty. As you know, both our traditional Oil-Base and Latex-Base DRYLOK Masonry Waterproofer are inert coatings, which mean they will not promote the growth of mold/mildew. Our new DRYLOK Extreme has a mildewcide additive to further prevent the potential for mold/mildew growth on the dry paint film under extreme situations.
Ok, with the economy being what it is, if you need more space the only place to look is down. Take that dark, damp and scary basement and turn it into the space you need. Yes, DRYLOK is a masonry waterproofer, but it also decorates as it waterproofs. DON’T, whatever you do, put ordinary house paint on those walls. You may not have a water or moisture problem right now, but you may in the future. Once you have a coating on the wall, if water starts being diverted to your basement you have no recourse. A waterproofing paint needs to enter the pores of the masonry, that’s how it stops water. And, if you ever decide to insulate, stud the walls and hang drywall you will be happy that DRYLOK Masonry Waterproofer is already on the masonry. In the meantime, for a cost effective alternative decorative solution, you can use Latex-Base Masonry Waterproofer, DRYLOK Extreme Masonry Waterproofer and Designer DRYLOK Masonry Waterproofer to create a bright and unique space to answer your need for more space. Whether your plans are for a basement pantry, woodshop, laundry room or even a living room you have to start with a dry space. All of DRYLOK Waterproofers are tested to hold back water, the only difference between these products are the look and feel you desire. Latex-Base DRYLOK and Extreme DRYLOK can be tinted to create a colorful decorative area that is moisture free. Designer DRYLOK is available in two fashion colors and can be used in the entire area or as an accent for decoration and water protection. The key to turning your basement into a useable space is to start with a waterproofing paint. A waterproofing paint is thicker than house paint so it will take longer to apply, but its application is as simple. You can apply most waterproofing paints with a stiff bristle brush or a roller. You simple work the product into the surface of the masonry, filling the texture with the coating. The thing to remember is that this coating needs to perform a task, so it is important to follow the label instructions. The experts at UGL recommend applying the first coat with a nylon or polyester bristle brush for best results. The second coat can be applied with a brush or masonry roller. Follow directions for application carefully. If the area you covered is more than the recommendation on the label, you’re spreading the paint too thin. Two coats are usually sufficient to stop seepage. However, if seepage is still present after several days, an additional coat may be necessary. Remember, you are only limited by your imagination, after you have followed the three steps of prep, patch and paint just add accent pieces for your own decorative touch.

Written: Jan 15 ’04 Steelfan’s Full Review: UGL Zar Wood Patch 3 Ounce Product Rating: Pros: You can nail, saw, and drill into it. Very easy to work with.Cons: NoneThe Bottom Line: Wood Patch is a big improvement over Wood Putty. Anyone looking to repair dents, gouges, chips or broken corners, this is the remedy. I’ve been working with wood for a long time. My first memory of woodworking was in shop class. We had certain projects that we needed to complete to pass the course. After that the rest of the time was ours for building whatever project that we wanted to. My project was a badly designed Gun Cabinet which I never really got completed. My Shop Teacher called it the “3 year Gun Cabinet”. Of course some of the reason that the project took so long was his fault, because he always ran me on errands. During this 3 year time, I became very familiar with wood putty. We used it like a bricklayer uses mortar. The mistakes were many and often. I could only imagine the school’s wood putty bill. Wood Putty was a very easy thing to use, but after applied it became a big pain in the neck. The sanding was seemed to take a lifetime, and the stain very seldom ever looked right in that area. Now years later and a lot wiser, I so happy that someone came up with a better way. Zar Wood Patch is one of the easiest wood repairing products to use from start to finish. It applies better and finishes flawlessly. What’s in the Wood Patch. First and foremost this compound is Latex, which means cleanup is done with soap and water. There is also treated pulverized wood in the patch to strengthen the patch and make it look more original. This allows less shrinkage and when dry, this area can be sanded, drilled, nailed or even sawed. It can be used for inside or outside use. Zar Wood Patch comes in three colors: Neutral, Red Oak, and Golden Oak. This is a nice array of colors for blending into furniture. For unfinished projects I use the Neutral color which after dried and sanded can be painted, varnished, stained, or left natural. This product works on wood projects that have dents, nail holes, broken and chipped corners, or covering screw heads. Wood Patch comes in a reseal-able plastic container that reminds me of a miniature paint can. This container is great for storing the wood patch between uses.Using Wood Patch First you must make sure that the wood is clean in the area of application. Then you dampen the wood with a wet cloth. Take a small amount of wood patch on a putty knife and press it into the dent or hole. Try to use as little of putty as possible to do the job. The area should be a little higher than the surrounding wood to allow for sanding. Let the wood patch set up for 24 hrs. Sand the area lightly until repaired surface is even with the rest of the wood surface. Blend the two surfaces together the best that you can. Sometimes deeper holes or dents may require two applications. You just simply repeat the process again or as many times as necessary. When the area is patched to your liking, you can add stain, paint, varnish, or polyurethane. For staining purposes it is advisable to apply once, wiping excess off immediately, then let dry over night. You then lightly sand the project again, and apply another coat of stain. Most wood projects should be protected to keep them looking nice.Cleaning Up. Since this product has a latex base, clean up is a breeze. Wipe our putty knife off with a damp cloth and clean in soap and water. Try not to let wood patch dry on your tools, it will stick to them like cement. My Thoughts on this Product. Being a woodworker for the last 20 some years, I had a lot of experiences with wood putty (some good, some bad). I can tell you that Zar Wood Patch is a much better product to work with then wood putty. With wood putty many time the area chips out during sanding, and the area is most noticeably lighter especially around the edges. This can be a big problem when sanding, and most times adds a lot of frustration to finishing a project. While I have not tried the Red Oak or Golden Oak colors for this product, I highly recommend the Neutral color for unfinished projects. Wood Patch is easier to work with, and looks much better when it’s sanded and finished. Also the fact that you can saw, drill, and even nail in to this area makes it even more attractive. If you are looking for a product to repair damage to your woodworking project or wood furniture this is a great place to start. I bought the smaller size the first time to try this product, but next time I will have not second thought about buy the quart size. The smaller size costs about $3 and also comes in a tube container. One More Little Tip. For those smaller, not so deep dents in wood, there is another process that I have used to great success. Take a fairly damp cloth and place over the dented area. Use a clothes iron to heat the cloth in that area. This process makes the wood in the dented area expand, and can bring the dented area out without the use of wood patch or putty. Be careful not to use too much water on the cloth.
I just wanted to let you know your Drylok paint is an exceptional product. When it rains I usually get water in my basement from the north wall. I don’t have a sump pump, so I am usually down there with a 10gal. shop vac to collect all of the water. When Hurricane Irene hit back in 2011, I spent the entire night vacuuming up water that was seeping into the basement. I was fortunate that I had power the entire time. This time when Hurricane Sandy was predicted to hit southern New Jersey, I had a purchased a gallon of Latex Base DRYLOK® Masonry Waterproofer. I prepped the north wall Saturday night and started painting Sunday morning. Unfortunately, I only had enough paint for one coat up to ~4’-0” above the floor. By rainfall, the paint still had another hour until it cured. From Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning the paint withstood the torrential downpour and ground saturation. There were a couple of pinholes here and there, but nothing to warrant more than a paper towel to clean it up. If I had lost power I knew I wouldn’t have to worry about the basement flooding. I plan to finish the rest of my basement with Drylok and will recommend it to anyone looking to waterproof their basement. Again, I was very impressed with the results.

But when your basement is dry, now that is the time to apply a basement waterproofer. It might be a big empty space filled with a bunch of stuff that should go to the garage sale or things that your kids left behind and never came back for, but think of what it could be (insert dream here). Even if you don’t have a water problem, a basement waterproofing paint, such as DRYLOK is made specifically for masonry. While the main function is to waterproof, it also beautifies a space by adding brightness and color that can really inspire you to do more with this space. How many of us have hobbies taking over our living space? The basement can be a cool, dry space for all of these hobbies: woodworking, tying flies, sewing, exercising, and getting other family members out of your hair, you name it. Visit www.ugl.com and watch the how to video, see how easy it is to waterproof with DRYLOK. Could millions of customers be wrong? I don’t think so. Stay cool and dry – “Laters Babe”, yes, a whole other reference and not from the Godfather.
